reviewed Detachment I could not help but compare this to Tony Kaye's debut American History X. Whereas that earlier film was an in-depth examination of hate and racism, Detachment does the same for apathy and productivity (an often paradoxical goal). Both films deal with how some social systems and rules tend to manufacture and encourage detrimental behaviors in people. Adrien Brody does a very good job of playing the substitute teacher doing his best to have an impact within his constraints as well as protect himself from the everyday terrors he sees bringing him down too far. Kaye adds an experimental edge to the editing and direction, which can be clunky and labored for the first half hour or so, but then really settles into an engrossing approach. At times bleak, awkward, and unpolished, it overcomes all of this with a lot of heart and earnest exploration of a serious social ill (ineffective education) with the intent to help. Memorable. -

reviewed Detachment This is GOLD! Adrien Brody is flawless. This movie is depressing, dark, yet beautiful and touching. Adrien Brody gave his best performance as usual. Tony Kaye did a great job. The other casts also did a great job as well. And I also love~ the editing and cinematography. VERY recommended movie IMO. -

reviewed Detachment Starring Adrien Brody, Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, By Tony Kaye, 2012. Director Tony Kaye's (American History X) long-awaited film Detachment stars Academy Award winner Adrien Brody as Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who conveniently avoids any emotional connections by never staying anywhere long enough to form a bond with either his students or colleagues. A lost soul grappling with a troubled past, Henry finds himself at a public school where an apathetic student body has created a frustrated, burned-out administration. Inadvertently becoming a role model to his students, while also bonding with a runaway teen who is just as lost as he is, Henry finds that he's not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world -

reviewed Detachment Phenomenal! 3 1/2 stars out of 4. Adrian Brody's best work since The Pianist. The entire cast from James Caan, Lucy Lui, to Marcia Gay Harden are all top notch. The real standout is newcomer Sami Gayle. Watch out for her she is a acting powerhouse that will be a contender in a few years.
